Tales of the Ocean a fan-made Tales game made using RPG Maker 2003. After having gone through several phases, including a webcomic, a written parody story and a series of animations, the project has finally transformed into the game we know today.

Though originally planned for a Summer 2008 release, technical difficulties meant that such a thing was not possible, and with university to attend this past year working on the project has become difficult for me. However, with several months of holiday and a new flame of passion for my work, I am a hundred percent committed to finishing the game this summer.

I want to take this time to thank everybody who has given something to the Ocean project. Be it blacklisted's graphics, Tree's fan-made boxart or Cudpug's cheeky comments, it is what it is because of your help and I couldn't have done it without you all. Come launch, know that this is one project that is dedicated to you all.

The Story

The world is a place of harmony and peace, ruled by the Draice Empire. In this world, humanity fears nothing and is united as one. One day, humanity located a new source of energy. Invisible to the human eye, but a greater source of power than anything else known. Because of the superstition amongst the common man that it had come from the netherworld it was named "neth".

With neth, humanity build machines and its empire grew evermore vast and powerful with each passing day. Until one fateful night, dubbed "The Night of Heaven's Tears", when the infant imperial princess Ryna began to cry. None could understand why, but after that day people all over the world began to change. Not in physical form, but they obtained strange powers. Some found they could see the future, while others found that they could control the elements. Some found that they could heal the wounds of others, and some found they could call invoke the powers of space. It was not known until later that this was a result of humanity's exposure to neth. Those exposed to it for too long found that they could manipulate the world around them by invoking the powers of neth. These abilities were known as "nethens" and those who used them as "nethists".

Sema Rathan was just a child when he found he could manipulate the water in the atmosphere, in the oceans, and in peoples bodies. As he grew older, he used this power to heal others, yet he never understood peoples facial expressions, loathed the touch of others, and found difficulty in large groups of people. He began a new life as the healer of the town of Raekommen. It is not until after he fails to save a life that his own is plunged into a journey to learn the nature of the chaos that is slowly gripping the world...

Sema Rathan is a youth from the island of Brannis. Born into a wealthy family in the town of Albia, he had much of life's comforts. However, he recently abandoned that and crossed the sea to the town of Raekommen, where he became a healer with his Neth of Water, which he was born with. Although Sema aspires to be a kind person he has a difficulty in understanding the thoughts and feelings of others at times. He is also very cautious and will not do anything unless he or his childhood friend Ayenni feels completely comfortable with it.

Ayenni is Sema's childhood friend. She is very close to Sema and it is often regarded that the two are like family. In the last two years, however, the two have been drifting away from each other somewhat. Ayenni is a kind girl, and is also much more outgoing than Sema, although she doesn't always show this. After two years of almost total separation, she recieves a letter from Sema asking her to come to the town of Raekommen...

Lani is a young girl from the town of Soldanese. She raises griffons with her family and does not distinguish between human and animal lives. Lani is incredibly optimistic and outgoing. She does, however, have a vicious streak which means that she can be very violent. Lani's nethic power allows her to manipulate the world's air and atmosphere.

Hisham is Areck's adoptive father. He is a man who cares a great deal about his family and is not afraid to give up his life for them. He and his wife Osonye took Areck in ten years ago, and as such are very protective of him. Hisham is the strongest party member physically. Not just because of his muscular build, but also because of his Neth of Steel, which strengthens his abilities and grants him a large amount of destructive power.

Felspar is a young woman who was recently married to Minister Rodrigue. She can often appear cold or uncaring, but this is merely because she is such a rational person who thinks and acts with a great level of logic. Although she can be harsh to strangers, she is a completely different person around her friends.

Empress Ryna Draice

Neth Type... Unknown

Empress Ryna lost her father at a young age. From then on, she has been reluctant to express her true feelings to anyone - constantly having to fend off gold digging suitors and tiresome governors. Little is known about the empress due to her lack of contact with the outside world. Although she gives the occasional speech in public, she rarely leaves her castle. No-one is quite sure why she has recently asked for all those with nethic power to be brought to her castle. Although the official statement is that she herself is a Nethist, there has yet to be word as to what it is exactly that she can do...


Grahm Astlers

Grahm is a commander in the imperial army. Having been raised as a soldier, he is ruthlessly efficient on the battlefield. This is not to say that he is an evil person, however, as he is known for being a very considerate leader to his soldiers. Grahm's nethic power allows him to intensify the sun's rays. Classified as one of the most powerful nethists ever to be born, it is rumoured that the leaders of the empire are constantly trying to keep him in check.

Cierph, along with Grahm, is another commander of the imperial army. Cierph's nethic ability allows him to manipulate and create sounds. However, he is unsatisfied with his power and is constantly seeking new ways to become stronger. He is short-tempered and easily angered but also somewhat effeminate and self-obsessed, which makes it more difficult to take him seriously, leading to his anger building even further. Cierph is obsessed by neth and believes that those who can use it will become the rulers of the planet.


Miria Yukita

Neth Type... Mirror

Miria is a very childish young woman, but also a very sadistic one. She finds great delight in inflicting pain on others, but also has a tendency to lose her temper and throw a tantrum when things aren't going her way. She utterly despises nethists, including herself. With her Neth of Mirror, Miria has the ability to change the direction that neth is channelled in. This allows her to reflect the abilities of other nethists, and also to change the current of neth in order to support herself or her allies.

Miria Yukita was submitted for use in Tales of the Ocean by blacklisted.

Narea Melchaus

Narea is the personal attendant of Empress Ryna. He appears to be weak, but he has a calculating mind. Narea is always one step ahead of those around him, and his intellect has earned him the respect of many. There are many who are envious of his close relationship with Empress Ryna and suspect it to be more than what it appears...

Rodrigue Esca

Rodrigue is the Minister of War in the imperial parliament. As such, he has a responsibility for being involved with the actions of the military. Despite his affilation with people such as Grahm and Cierph, he is actually a very caring individual who believes that the crisis in the world can be solved through means other than violence. He is very supportive of the party and loves his wife Felspar very much.

Osonye Chojirus

Neth Type... Foresight

Osonye is the wife of Hisham and Areck's adoptive mother. She, along with her husband Hisham, was taken away by the imperial army because of her ability to use neth, specifically the Neth of Foresight, which allows her to see the future on a limited scale. She is a very loving person, although she can be strict and demanding at times.

Ralgoth is an old friend of Hisham's. He is a doctor working at Anquedor Village. He is the embodiment of the calm and collected stereotype, practically nothing ever worries him and he has the uncanny ability to stay focused on the task at hand in even the most severe of situations. His calm personality is matched only by his fanatical sense of loyalty to the empire. His nethic power allows him to manipulate existing electrical currents and create lightning.

Elily Merids

Neth Type...Genes

Elily is Ralgoth's only daughter. Her Neth of Genes grants her the power to change the biological makeup of anything she pleases which makes her an incredibly powerful nethist, one who is constantly under watch by the imperial army. Elily is frightful of her own power and has a somewhat shaky relationship with her father. It is not uncommon for her to be missing for long periods of time, but her reasons for doing so are unclear.

Introduction

The following is the list of techniques and spells (known as "nethens") in
Tales of the Ocean. It covers all of the characters and all of their skills.

This tech list shall be updated as the amount of skills used in the series increases, as such it shall be constantly updated.

Jan Akiyama has been a huge influence on these redesigned tech lists. While some of his ideas I fear were far too ambitious for the limited animation capacities of the sprites and indeed myself, his influence rubbed off a lot and it should be apparant here in these redesigned tech lists. The truth is, a lot of the moves here combine aspects from his work and new ideas, or utterly new thoughts based on his brainchildren, so please give him a big random applause.

Extensions
-------------

Some abilities are extension skills. This means that the attack will always
follow another. For example, Double Demon Fang will follow Demon Fang whenever it is used.

Unison Attacks
-----------------

When two characters combine their abilities together to perform a
unique skill. There is one Unison Attack per character pair.

Nethic Charges
------------------

The name given to special skills or "Hi-Ougi's" as they are known.

The level of the Nethic Charge indicates its base damage in thousands. For
example...

Lv. 1 ... Base damage of 1000
Lv. 2 ... Base damage of 2000
Lv. 3 ... Base damage of 3000

And so on and so forth...

The less Nethic Charges a character has, the less important they are to
the storyline, generally speaking. Or maybe a small amount of Nethic Charges
means that they're not around for long anyway.

Because of their power, Nethic Charges consume 50% of the users maximum TP.

Sema does a sword slash covered in water.

Crescent Slash
Sema does a downwards slash followed by an upwards slash, forming the image of a crescent moon.

Shadow Claw

Sema does a slash to his right, a slash to his left and then does a thrust forwards.

Soaring Fissure
Water Element, Anti-Air
Sema does a slash with his sword and then does a rising slash which creates a small geyser of water as he rises upwards into the air.

Replenish
Sema restores a slight amount of HP to an ally and cures them of any negative ailments that they may have.

Great Liquefier
Water Element, Negates enemy Defence, Halves enemy Defence
Sema charges up watery energy for a long time and then when he can take no more he releases it by crashing his sword on the ground and striking with a powerful torrent of searing water.

Black Tornado
Absorbs HP from the target
Sema pauses for a moment and then does a spinning slash upwards whilst
surrounded by a colourless maelstrom.

Searing Soar Slash
Anti-Air
Sema knocks his foe into the air with a rising sword slash and then does a multi-hitting sword combination on them whilst rising higher and higher into the skies.

Myriad Thrust
Water Element, Anti-Ground
Sema does a teleport, vanishing and re-appearing with a falling thrust in front of his foe and then he does five swift thrusts with his sword. He then pulls off another teleport-sword-thrust to go behind his foe where he does nine thrusts with his sword. He then rears back a little for one final thrust which goes straight through his foe.

Sacred Sabre
Water Element, Freeze Effect
Sema radiates freezing cold blasts of water from his body before doing a slash which goes straight through his target and skewers them on several freezing cold stalagmites. He then does another slash which goes straight through his foe and shatters the ice crystals.

Sema does a large rising slash with his sword, forming the image of a blue crescent moon.

Water Shadow
Water Element, Dizzy Effect
Sema does a large "X" slash covered in water.

Maelstrom Rising
Water Element, Anti-Air
Sema does two circular slashes with his sword, each one covered in water, and then pulls off a rising slash covered in water.

Moonlight Shadow

Sema does nine thrusts followed by three rising crescent slashes.

Soaring Moonlight
Water Element, Anti-Air Effect
Sema rises into the sky, drawing a large crescent moon with his sword, and then flips over and crash-lands on the ground, summoning a large geyser of water to strike his foe.

Fissure Claw
Water Element, Anti-Air, Dizzy-Effect
Sema does a rising slash covered in water, then does a slash that phases through the foe. He does nine thrusts with his sword whilst behind the foe before doing another watery slash which phases through them, back to his starting position.

Kapiru creates a series of ice particles and they go flying upwards into the air. Sema then does a powerful slash straight through his foe. Kapiru then turns the small ice particles into huge frigid rocks and they trap the foe in a huge prism of ice. Sema then turns around and attacks with a hugely powerful sword slash which creates a very powerful shockwave around the target, utterly shattering the icy crystals which the foe is encased it.

Areck creates a large fireball and Lani absorbs its powers. She then proceeds to unleash a fiery barrage of arrows upon all foes whilst Areck conjures up a fiery windstorm which incinerates everything in the vicinity. A re-make of Nanaly Fletch's Hi-Ougi from Tales of Destiny 2.

I could help with the character designs but scanning will be slow on the uptake. However, I think I can design a pretty good character with the basic structure of the Tales attacks. I think at least one character should have moves like Gouhazan and stuff like that mainly because they are a Tales given. Removing them would be interfering with the basic ethics of the game. But I could make a moveset that will turn them to be more unique.

(Also, while your sprite modding is good, its jsut reusing pieces. I can reproduce them in pencil, but I think sticking to sprite bits mess them up a bit so may I meddle with the character designs a bit?)

If you can do level design then you are officially my new Right-Hand Man(TM). I shall put you down for voicing at once. Any sprite-work you can do will be much appreciated.

Jan Akiyama:
The technique lists are incomplete and will be added/increased over time. Some moves, however (for example, Sonic Thrust) were left out on grounds of general crappiness (who needs Sonic Thrust once you get Sword Rain, afterall?) or non-consistancy (Light Spear is never the same move twice, kids) or because they don't appeal to me (Luke and Veigue show that you don't need Majinkens and Akisazame's to be a Tales hero! Go them!).

While Ranna has pretty much covered the re/design of the first five characters, I would much appreciate to see any designs you have for other members of the cast. I shall list all the other sub-characters that I have included in the script so far, as well as any specific details regarding them.

Hisham Chojirus - A tall African dressed in greys, blacks, dark-reds, furs and anything else he can get his hands on due to living as a bandit. Despite his occupation, he is actually quite an intellectual person and there are signs that his banditry (is that even a real word? Well, it is now) is self-chosen rather than by circumstance. He uses the Neth of Steel.
Ralgoth Merids - Another African (I just think we need more of a mixed-race theme in stories and games), a well-respected doctor and medic who knows a lot of the world. He is in his early-forties, but looks much younger. He controls the Neth of Atmosphere and wields a double-bladed sword made from Neth he has gathered together, giving it an ethereal look and feel.
Elily Merids - Ralgoth's daughter. A young girl of fourteen who uses the Neth of Physique to heal others. She is intellegent and modest, but somewhat timid.
Cierph - A swift swordsman clad in grey and black and a giant hat (come on, every Tales needs somebody in a hat). Cierph controls the Neth of Sound and is something of a primary antagonist to Sema's group. He isn't very intellegent, but he is ruthless and never gives up a chase.
Rook - Cierph's official right-hand man, an aggressive blonde-haired youth armed with two swords. He also really doesn't like Sema. He controlls the Neth of Stone.
Grahm - Part of the Imperial Guard along with Cierph and Rook, Grahm is a tall man in his twenties who uses the Neth of Sun. He is calm and composed about most things, and despite a strong sense of morality he will follow any order his leader gives him even if he does not agree with it.

Again, any sprites you can make me would be much appreciated!!

Strong lack of redheads...

Ya mind if I make a suggestion?

Why not let me design a moveset for a character your characters will fight that uses the movesets of the old? Ya don't have to be cliche like that and you'll actually have a character to use that will still utilize old techs. And I can make Sonic thrust not so useless.

But anyway, I don't make sprites on the grounds that I have an extremely faulty mouse. Therefore, I can only submit sketches for you to work with. Your designs seem to lack a redhead though. (I have a thing for redheaded characters, sorry.)

Anyway, try this. The character moveset is made for someone with a Sword and Shield.

Demon Fang- Self explanatory.

Sonic Thrust- again.

Lightspear- The one from ToS. it works best with what i have in mind.

Beast- The character guards and then rams the shield foward. It travels farther than a normal beast but still hits only once.

Sword Rain-Hits 5 times. Same basic sword rain.

Tempest- Again self explanatory.

Swallow dance-Drag target into the air and then slash down.

Tiger Blade- Slash up and then slash down. Whoopee.

Now the upgrades.

Blast Fang- Create a large but short range fang. The fang gradually gets larger the farther it is but will hit less times.

Force Thrust- A stab foward followed be a blast that pushes the target a fair distance. The push is not as strong on large foes.

Light Spear Cannon- Same stuff.

Hunting Beast- Drag the target into the air with multiple slashes before slamming them back down with a huge lion head.

Sonic Sword Rain- Just an Upgrade of Sword rain.

Vorpal Tempest- A tempest that has a wider attack radius.

Falcon Dance- Spin to drag target up before diving and stabbing down.

Heavy Tiger Blade- Same stuff.

Combo Techs- The good stuff...

Rail Fang (Blast Fang/Force thrust)- Charge straight through the target and then release a huge fang wave back the way you came.

Fang Tempest (Blast Fang/Vorpal Tempest)- Throw the shield like a boomerang to hit your target. (it travels like a buzzsaw so it has a pretty big range.)

Fang Raid (Blast Fang/Sonic Sword Rain)- throw 9 fangs that deviate from the center the farther they travel from the user. Only 1 will stay on the beaten path.

Light Blast (Force Thrust/Light Spear Cannon)- Same old.

Light Storm (Light Spear Cannon/Sonic Sword Rain)- Release a bunch of seeking spears.

Light Wave- (Light Spear Cannon/Blast Fang)- Slash target into air but then throw multiple cutters at them from the ground instead of stabbing upwards.

Thorn Blade (Force Thrust/Sonic Sword Rain)-Create a bunch of spearlike Shockwaves.

Howling Beast (Vorpal Tempest/Hunting Beast)- Spin into the air (Like Link in SSBM) and the release a huge beast head into the sky, knocking everyone apart.

Ground Breaker (Hunting Beast/Sonic Sword Rain)- Fire 3 beasts into the target in rapid succession. The same move used by Farah Oersted.

Tornado Dance (Vorpal Tempest/Falcon Dance)-Spiral and charge into the air, dragging the target up as well. Similar to the move used by Sync the Tempest.

Shadow Blade (Heavy Tiger Blade/Falcon Dance)- Slash the target into the air by rapidly teleporting and slashing.

Tiger Wrath(Heavy Tiger Blade/Vorpal Tempest)- Slash target into the air before running into them with a tempest followed by slamming them into the ground.

Smash Dance (Falcon Dance/Force Thrust)-Slash target into the air and then pause before landing and deilvering a stab to the ground, making the ground erupt.

Hi Ougi-

First Level- Kingdom Divide- Raise sword and create whirlwind before creating a pillar of light from the blade and then slashing down.

Second Level- Arms Genocide- Turn screen black and then disappear, reappearing every so often and releasing shockwaves all around the battlefield before returning to original spot and blowing the area up.

I would prefer you to to meddle with the following character's movesets:

- Areck
- Lani
- Kapiru
- Ayenni
- Hisham

Due to the fact that I have already made their animations, plans, etc and I don't want to have to scrap them. However, I am not satsified with Sema's tech list at all so if you would like to redesign it, then please go ahead. However, water-based techniques are an absolute must. And I would also like for the following skills to be present in the tech list as these are Sema's trademark moves.

Crescent Slash (this is his inital move, much like Fang Blade is to Luke or Demon Fang is to 99% of Tales heroes)
Searing Soar Slash
Ascension

As long as you include those moves in it, then I have no objection to any tech list you design for Sema.

PS. I would love for you to make Sonic Thrust (if you use it) more interesting. I normally don't like to swear, but it is an utterly shit technique. Stab a foe. Um. Like. Wow. Don't most Tales heroes have a stab in their combo's? That's why any Sonic Thrust type moves HAVE to be exciting and more dynamic than a lousy thrust. I look forward to seeing what you can do!!

PPS. Don't worry. We have a red-headed villain. ^^

They're where I get most of my Tales sprites from. The reason that we don't have a lance/spearman is mostly because, erm... unless you count Loni (who really uses more of an axe-kind of thing anyway)... there aren't any. Well, there's Jade (Tales of the Abyss) and Eugene (Tales of Rebirth) but they don't have sprites.

Any sprites you can make will be much appreciated. Please bear in mind, however, that I've already used the following sprites:

- Zelos
- Nanaly
- Philia
- Loni
- Keel
- Rassius/Race
- Frio (Swordsman)
- Judas

Just to let you know before you waste your time doing one that I've already covered. If you can make any sprites, however, they would be much appreciated. Make a sprite-sheet of a lanceman and I will have to include it.

Towns:

Raekommen
A small village where the story begins. Not very crowded, and populated by very simple folk.

Near to Raekommen is... a large forest.

Soldanese
A town near a large mine, and also where Lani comes from. Different varieties of griffon make their nests in the large cliffs and forests surrounding the town.

Near to Soldanese is... a large forest in the south, and huge cliffs to the north.

Rostaia
A tiny settlement hidden in the forests, made up only of the few unfortunate enough to be stranded in the nearby jungle without hope of getting out.

Near to Rostaia is... a LOT of jungle... -_-'

Thrace
A gigantic city with a large port and absolutely tonnes of people. The trade-centre of the world.

Near to Thrace is... a habour.

Brannis
A small and quiet island town. Sema and Ayenni's home.

Near to Brannis is... a gigantic steel tower in the far-off distance.

Bandit Village
Areck and Hisham's home. A village full of thiefs, bandits and refugees.

Near to Bandit Village is... lots of caves and secret passageways for its inhabitants to get in and out.

Anquedor
A pristine city of knowledge, home to a large university and many brilliant minds with a lighthouse a short walk away from it.

Near to Anquedor is... a university, a lighthouse, and a road to the imperial city.

Draice
The imperial city. The largest city in the world and also home to the palace.

Near to Draice is... the palace, and a road to Anquedor.

Relda
A village in the desert, full of lost travellers, stranded people and very superstitious locals. Fortunatly, Lani can use the power of bribery to get information out of them. XD

Near to Relda is... "FAR TOO MUCH DAMN DESERT!!" - Lani

Aelids
The remains of what was once a great imperial outpost in the freezing south, but now full of elderly people who reflect constantly on the past golden age of the last emperor.

Near to Aelids is... a huge frozen wasteland, which also consists of several other villages which have been unfortunate enough to have been utterly frozen over.

The sprites are all there. For the third link, look for "Tales of the World: Narikiri Dungeon" (2 and 3) and you'll find them. Any sprites would be much appreciated.

UPDATES: We have a healer! Like, zomg! As Ranna would no doubt say. Most of us would say "Oh, FIIINNNAAALLLLYYY!!"

Our healer is Felspar, the new magic-user added.
In the way of sprites, just anything really. Enemies are always appreciated, from genero-frogs to humongo-golems. Anybody who can do a good sprite design for Sema and/or Felspar would also be appreciated. Backgrounds, levels. Really, if you can sprite it I can no doubt include it.

PS. UPDATES!!

Anybody who can make tiny "Ougi-Mugs" as I call them for all the characters will recieve the TTM Award for Incredible Talent. For the characters Felspar and Hisham, here's what you need to know as they don't have mugshots... Yet!

Felspar - Young woman, long chestnut brown hair.
Hisham - Man in late twenties, black skin, slightly spiked black hair.


The little face of the character highlighted in the white box is what I mean. I hope I'm making myself clear as I can often not be very forthcoming in what I need. Oh dear, I do hope I'm making sense there as well -_-'...

The idea is to have something to replace the simple sprite-face on a cut-in for the Hi-Ougi's. Below is an example. Prize to whoever guesses what the name translates to.



I want to try and have better faces to use instead of the sprite ones for the attack name, y'see.

My advice, keep it that way. Asch's Hi-ougi got nuetered with a simple name change. The english name stinks. And Shippou Raisenbou got even MORE neutered. Thanks but no thanks. I can draw a few cut ins but you'll have to color them.
