Anybody excited? I know I am. There is no greater project in Blizzard than this. The story, the units, the beauty of the maps, not to mention the beautiful balance. I cannot stress the awesomeness of this game enough. The wait is killing me on this but lord it will all be worth it when I finally get to touch this game.

To start off many of the classic units are gone in the favor of replacing them with more strategic units BUT are said to still be available in the map editor so that you can freely use them as you see fit. A VERY nice addition compared to the original.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ruGonoCrql4

This is a demo video of a Starcraft II promo test battle that shows show of the changes to the game. The inclusion of the barrier fields for the Protoss is an awesome new tactical addition that while being situational, it more than makes up for it in brilliance of use. The Zerg have also quite a few incredible changes like the infestors and the banelings.

But what piques my interest is the shift in combat speed. Battles have become quicker and much more decisive. I am looking forward to this fine game.

Not really. They canned Starcraft: Ghost after a bazillion delays, so I'm not really that bothered.

Oh my...

I need to purchase a laptop capable of playing this, I adore Starcraft <3

And what? Blizzard realised that Ghost was going to be below their standards, so trashed it. Saying that you're not interested because of that is very silly.

I was hoping for a link to Gundams in the video, but Star Trek was the best I could come up with. It's a natural mechanism against the OP =/

Ah, can't blame you. It's a lovely game, though :3

I think RTS games will reach a point where they can't do much moar. I was never the biggest fan of Dawn of War, so hopefully they'll keep this to the old-but-tested method.

I think it's a pretty big problem, yeah.

It's impossible to innovate the genre without hurting its core appeal in someway. I mean, DoW is good, sure but it's quite weak in comparison to most traditional RTS'.

I think the console space or voice control is the next, big move for RTS' if they wish to innovate in any way.

It's a genre that will always work best on PC, really. Mouse, keyboard with hotkeys...all that. Age of Empires II tried to do PS2 and failed.

That said, I still really enjoy Age of Empires (the original) above a lot of more recent RTS games.

I thought it was down to general disorganisation, like Duke Nukem Forever, which would reflect badly on the studio. But, since you know everything about games, as usual, I guess I'll rethink my stance here. =P

Its more like indefinite Hiatus. Blizzard is basically discouraged from the process but they still are pretty attached to it. It may or may not return in the future but as of now, Starcraft II is the much bigger project.

And are you kidding? Blizzard has done leaps and bounds to make innovation to the RTS genre! It was they who invented ways to make it work to begin with! Starcraft was the first ever RTS game to have 3 distinctly different races and it set the standard. Now they are taking those same races and bringing them even further than before. Try watching the rest of the battle reports. They really show the innovation if you look for them. Many of them may be simple. But Real time Strategy still has a long way to go before it can truly be considered the pinnacle of what you can possibly do.

Also, for a single race, there are many ways to play them, not just the norm. Try looking up those competition level games in Korea. Many of the veteran players are so good at what they do that it becomes really a race to get the jump on your opponent in as many ways as possible while outwitting your opponent's attempts to do the same.

Those innovation happened in the 90's. We're talking about now, of course they innovated but i'm talking about continuing the process now.

You underestimate the ability of the RTS. The open ended nature IS the greatest selling point. You see, there was a reason why Warcraft III was so popular and it was because of the fact that it gave you so many options.

They added many superficial gameplay themes like land units with the ability to jump up to another terrain level or air units that can turn into ground units but there is still more than that.

What makes Starcraft II so hyped is the ability to fully use the benefits of the Map Editor to really customize what you can do on it. Warcraft III far outlived its lifespan because of the popularity of mods like DotA.

They weren't kidding when they said the game was going to be epic. Pretty much everything is getting an overhaul, even the map editor.

Ahh, but map editors aren't everything. NWN2 had one of the most powerful map editors in a video game...to the point that it was far too difficult to use.

But you see, everything they did in that video was done in an afternoon. No mods, no hacks, nothing. Just the tools in the game. This means that yes, they made it easier to use as well.

I look forward to playing this.
But I don't get my hopes up. I love the original and I hate these delays. Sad

Ever heard of Operation Can't Wait any longer? That was what people were doing since Blizzard delayed Starcraft for so long. Starcraft II is delayed on us for quite some time but it does little to deter fans. I expect it will be good for a long time.

Rumor has it South Korea will invade the U.S. if Blizzard mucks up the game-- so they're taking their sweet time with it.
Or so I've heard.
