Updates:

Might as well update this page with the official information now, given Captain Subtle's leaking. =P

First of all, a few playable characters. The characters seen in the trailer are Rash Quinn and Juna Bellacroix. Rash is an optimistic young man searching for evidence of ghosts in a society that denies the existence of the otherworldly, while Juna is a girl who can communicate with and dominate the spirits in order to harness their supernatural powers. The paranormal theme will have an effect not just on the storyline, but also the gameplay, though I'm afraid that I can't give away too much at this point.

While the protagonists will be older than those seen in Tales of the Ocean, the game will not be "darker and edgier", since I'm sure we all know how well that sort of direction turns out.


Over two hundred new special moves await you in the new game.


Treasure chests will be more apparent in the new game than they were in my previous work, as will visible enemies, however...


... Renegade spirits aren't the only creatures you'll encounter over the course of your adventure.


Even generic NPC's will have their own names. The coloured text is a purely stylistic choice.

Updates!!:

I can now reveal the title and logo of the next game. Many thanks to the ever-talented .:Tree:. for providing the latter.



The next game's title will be Deceit x Justice. As you probably all expected, it will be another RPG. However, I have begun to implement several systems that will spice up the combat and the overall gameplay.

First of all, there are Fetches. Characters in Deceit x Justice can learn special techniques called "geis" after bonding with special ghosts called "Fetches". Once a Fetch has been recruited, you will be able to set and remove it at will as if it were a piece of equipment. Each Fetch has a variety of abilities and talents that will alter certain statistics as a character levels up, or even grant useful bonuses. These can range from increasing resistance to Poison to making it easier to move heavy loads outside of battle.

Secondly, there is the Conditional Technique Change system. This changes the nature of each character's geis based on a multitude of factors, including the surrounding environment, what kind of equipment they are using, and also what kind of Fetch has been set to them.


An example of CTC during gameplay. One of Rash's geis undergoes a change to adapt to the surrounding environment.

Well, it wouldn't be an RPG unless you could loot through some poor soul's hard-earned stash of goodies.


Mossy cave, waterfalls and wolves. All in a day's work for a budding adventurer.

I'm still working on the battle sprites, so I'll update as soon as some more of them are finished. In the meantime, here's some information on the story and the two main characters.

The Story


After centuries of warfare, the continent of Yupea was finally unified under one banner. But after so many years of fighting, "peace" meant nothing to the masses, especially with the once-green land now ruined, incapable of sustaining life.

Desperate for any means to revive the country, the royal family organised the remaining armed forces and invaded the neighbouring country of Belias, taking its people back to Yupea as slaves. Before long, Yupea had begun selling the Belians worldwide, setting up a slave trade that spread like wildfire. Although there was initial international outcry at Yupea's actions, the profits of the slave trade soon convinced opponents to turn a blind eye so long as they could share in the newfound wealth. Internal opponents, such as the Yupean church and rioting slaves were cut down without mercy by Yupea's soldiers, now reformed and reorganised as the Grand Aegis League, an organisation that promised to ensure the protection of the Yupean people and to keep a tight control over her slaves.

In the sixty-five years that followed the unification Yupea became the most powerful country in the world, but all of the League's power and the slave trade's profits did nothing to alleviate the rumours of Belian ghosts wandering the land, claims that the League has tried to dismiss on many occasions, although its harsh punishment of anyone who voices them openly has shrouded it in an air of suspicion...

Whoo! Big update is big. I am loving the idea of the "Fetches" system, reminds me of the items you equipped in Final Fantasy IX and how they gave you abilities. And as always, the screenshots are looking as slick as ever!

The logo looks great alongside the screenshots, and Im glad we got it just right. Theres a folder on my laptop called DXJ Logos which is packed full of PNGs.

All in all, its a great game and I look forward to helping more on it and eventually playing it in due course!

Anywhoo, I'll be updating in the next couple of days as well. Also, in case you hadn't noticed in the credits, we've got a Monster Book, so I'll upload some screens of that in a bit once I'm done with the Wikiarticles.

And I'd also like to take this time to say that although the genre and art style are similar, this game will not be connected to Tales of the Ocean in any way, shape, or form. Apologies for those who wanted a sequel, but I find them too restricting to be fun.

Updates:

Here's a new trailer, made up of all the screenshots I've taken thus far stuck together. Made it partially as a test of my Final Cut skills. Please let me know what you think, and how I can improve my video editing since I plan on using Final Cut to edit all my videos from hereon out.

Updates:

It's a relatively minor thing, but I wanted to mention it anyway. Like in Ocean, I'm going to be taking a different approach to weapons and armour in this game. Specifically, I'm introducing a "Weight" system. The heavier an item is, the more it will slow you down while equipped. Each piece of equipment will weigh a certain amount in proportion not just to their attack power, but also to any special properties that they might have. So, to use a very basic example, a fire-sword will weigh more than a normal sword, even if they have the same attack strength. A character wearing too much equipment might be able to shrug off attacks with ease, but it may get too much for them and their attack or casting times may decrease as a result.

However, there are many items which will change your geis via the CTC system through their special abilities. So, it will be up to the player whether they want to sacrifice special functions and new techniques for the sake of speed and purely statistical increases.

Edit:

Body armour about 75~85% implemented.

Not really. I don't see my Workshop topics as "chat threads" per se. They're more like progress meters for me, that is to say I just post up any updates or new things regarding the game on them so that the people like Ivan and the Admins and anybody else who follows my work can see how development is coming along. I mostly just post these updates and progress reports up so I can get feedback and reactions from the people who will be playing the game when it's released.

Repost Edit:

I'm going to start putting up progress reports like I did with Ocean, to let everybody know what progress I've made so far on the game. I'd like to have a playable technical demo that'll show off some of the mechanics done sometime in October.

In the way of today's implementations, I've programmed in 217 pieces of armour and accessories. Yeah, I know it's a lot. I guess that I just have no life. ~_~'

I cant wait to get my hands on this one. Hopefully the installation process wont be as hard and confusing as RPGM2003's games are.

The whole armour thing sounds interesting, and It looks like we can have many choices in our setups. Love it!

Height... 184cm

A hardworking young Major who grew up with Rash, Liore's apparent obedience and flirtatious words made him very popular, especially among women. However, he also has an extremely ambitious side, and is not afraid to cast others aside if they get in his way. Extremely cynical towards the idea of ghosts, he is constantly trying to disprove the many rumours that have sprung up among the slaves. Although he views Rash as something of an older brother, he is occasionally infuriated by his naivete.

Age... 40
Height... 188cm

A man who has dealt in arms, illicit substances, and anything else that can be smuggled onto the black market. A lifetime of seeing the darker side of human nature has made Sion cynical and unable to trust anyone but himself. Rude, lecherous and utterly disloyal to everyone he meets, he injects pessimism and innuendo into every conversation, and will only raise a finger to help others when there is some kind of material gain involved for him. Sion's one redeeming factor is that he will never allow a child to be harmed, going so far as to use his own body to shield them.

Unfortunately not. RPG Makers have a way of screwing over anybody who tries to do a real-time system if they don't understand programming. I am prepared to learn how to if I find a good system, but if I do that it will be several months until it gets implemented.

For now, I just want to focus on getting all the boring stuff like the geis, equipment, animations and the gameplay enhancements I know I can do done before I start tinkering with the core code itself and risk making promises I might not be able to keep, not to mention risking obliterating the main game's programming structure itself. However, if something does comes through then I'll post it up here ASAP. Don't hold your breath, though. My apologies, Whalesong.

Anyway, I've been laying the grounds for the technical demo, so you guys can expect that in a few weeks or so. I'll showcase the Weight and CTC systems for you all to see there.

A fifth character will also be unveiled in the demo. Keep your eyes peeled.

BUMP/REPOST:

For the next trailer of the game, we will be doing voice acting. Yes, you read that right.

Now, just so you know, that doesn't guarantee that the game itself will be fully voiced. It just means that the trailer will have voiced lines of dialogue in it. Either way, this means that I will be taking auditions for actors.

So far, Alex has put in a bid for Sion and I'm going to do one for Rash (mostly because I fancy playing against my usual type of creepy, shady and evil voices, but that doesn't mean that it's a taken role: I'm happy to concede it to anybody who can do a better job than me). Either way, if you fancy trying out, please let me know who and I'll send you the lines for you to record.

There are also a few characters in the upcoming trailer who I haven't announced yet, so if you want to try for them, by all means ask for who they are and what they say well.

2003 is freeware. The new program Sam is using costs money and they're pretty strict about it. You won't be able to get it for free just like that, I doubt.

What I mean is, you didnt need 2003 to play games made on it. Same should go for VX. You pay for the game maker program itself. Theres an export function which creates an install file which just installs the game. No need to have RPG Maker installed.

You can play the game in the game maker, but you could just cheat your way through it.

Or it would be like having to buy and licence the UnrealEngine to play UT3.

Tree's exactly right. The maker itself costs money. However, people who don't have it can play the games made with it without any problems. Think of it just as he described. You don't need to buy the Unreal Engine to play the games made with it. In the same way, you won't need to buy RPG Maker VX to play Deceit x Justice.

Bump/Repost/Updates:

This is kinda important, so I figured it should warrant its own post.

I have officially begun to learn RGSS2, the scripting language that RPG Maker VX uses. This means that I'll be able to understand the game's code itself, which will hopefully allow me to make better use of the scripts provided by others (much credit to them). In particular, I've begun to understand DerVVulfman's Animated Battlers, which means battles will be side-view as opposed to the front-view normally seen in VX games. I'll post some screenshots up once I feel a bit more comfortable with my ability, but for now rest assured that I'm pulling out all the stops here.

Oh, and one more thing:

"Vegeta, what does the scouter say about the amount of armour and accessories in Deceit x Justice?"

Updates:

Sorry that I haven't updated this page in days, guys. Been sick and all. But I feel like I've made a full recovery now, so I'll be updating the game and the main topic whenever I can.

There's not much in the way of updates I can reveal just yet (it's mostly spoilery story stuff), but I can tell you that the script for the first demo and for the first voiced trailer has been written, so everyone who was interested in voicing should expect those later today.

Finally, I don't remember if I told everyone or not, but I figured I'd say it anyway because it's his birthday and I want to big him up as much as I can: Cudpug has become my punch-up-writer of sorts, for lack of a better term, so you can officially consider this our first collaboration project in three years. Just in case you needed another reason why this is gonna be awesome.

Nothing too fancy, just letting everybody know that I've sent the lines to them, in case they haven't seen their inboxes yet.

We're still taking in voice-actors, and we have plenty of parts that haven't been announced yet, so everybody who's interested in this should probably get the word out to anybody else who might be interested. And then we could have quite an army of awesome voice actor people.

Primarily, I'd like to have all of the playables cast as soon as possible, since I need them for the trailers and demo's. In other news, I can record videos again, so Deceit x Justice will be getting some YouTube video coverage treatment, just like Ocean. However, I can't decide whether to upload the full game or just the important scenes. For that reason, I want you (yes, you, right at the back) to decide for me.
